James “Jay” Mayfield joined Edell, Shapiro & Finnan in 2017. Jay has a degree in Civil Engineering and worked in the field while receiving his higher education. Jay also has extensive experience with computer science and information technology. His practice experience includes the preparation of patent applications, patent prosecution, and freedom-to-operate analyses.

Jay began his career in intellectual property as in-house counsel at IBM. While at IBM, Jay gained extensive experience with the preparation and prosecution of software-related inventions, especially with regard to patent eligibility. While in law school, Jay worked as a patent agent intern at a patent boutique firm prosecuting patent applications for various technical inventions. Prior to his career in intellectual property, Jay worked at a civil engineering firm performing work tasks relating to highway engineering and topographical surveying.

In his free time, Jay enjoys spending time with his family, board games, cooking, and traveling.
