James Donegan is a patent agent at ESF and has been involved in the intellectual property field since 2011, joining the firm in 2020.  With a degree in Electrical Engineering and related practical work experience, James focuses his practice on representing clients in domestic and foreign patent application prosecution strategies and portfolio management. James further brings a wealth of experience to counseling clients on a wide range of IP matters such as freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and infringement analysis and opinions, and related matters.

James specializes in a wide variety of electrical, computer, and communication technologies, including:

James began his career in intellectual property while getting his undergraduate degree, working as a legal assistant for an independent patent attorney whose primary client was in the gas turbine combustion systems industry.  James subsequently worked as an electronics engineer and intellectual property manager at UniKey Technologies, Inc., a start-up engineering firm in Orlando, FL, that developed and licensed firmware, Bluetooth-enabled mobile applications, and front- and back-end software applications for residential and commercial passive-keyless entry systems. At UniKey, James worked closely with fellow engineers to facilitate ideation; managed and facilitated patent prosecution; and worked closely with executives in asserting and defending patents in IPR and district court proceedings.

Prior to joining Edell, Shapiro & Finnan, James gained several years of domestic and foreign patent application prosecution experience in a variety of electrical, computer, and communication technologies as a technical advisor and patent agent at a reputable intellectual law firm in the greater Washington, DC area.

In his free time, James enjoys spending time with his fiancé and dogs, playing volleyball, snowboarding, reading, and traveling.
